About
The Department of Economics was started in 1976, with the offering of the B.A. Economics programme. M.A. Economics was introduced in 1980 and Ph.D. (Part-time) was offered for a while. The year 1981 saw the introduction of the B.A. Economics course in Shift II. M.Phil. Economics was introduced in 2013.

A diploma course in Retail Management was introduced to improve students’ employability
The Department has long-held ties with the Madras Institute of Development Studies (MIDS) and Malcolm Adiseshaiah Trust and has won accolades for several minor research projects completed with funding from these institutions.

Students Seminar on the topic “Application of Statistical Tools in Data Analysis” was conducted for B.A. Economics - Shift I students on 3 March, 2022. The Chief Guest was Dr. D. Sathiyavan, Associate Professor & Head, Dept. of Econometrics & Member Syndicate, University of Madras.
Students seminar was organized for B.A. Economics - Shift II students on 21 March, 2022, on the topic "The Impact of Covid-19 on the Indian Economy". Dr. P. G. Babu, Director, Madras Institute of Development Studies (MIDS), Chennai, was the Chief Guest.
